Maintaining a home can sometimes feel overwhelming, especially when you’re juggling multiple responsibilities. But there’s a sense of peace that comes with knowing your space is tidy and functional. I’ve learned a few tricks that help me keep our home in order without getting bogged down by the tasks. Here are some things I’ve found work for our family—maybe they’ll help you too.
1. Stick to a Schedule
It’s all about setting a routine. One thing that really helps me is keeping certain tasks scheduled on specific days of the week. For example, I clean the bathrooms every Tuesday, change the bedding on Wednesdays, and order groceries on Thursdays. This way, nothing feels like a big, daunting task, and I don’t feel overwhelmed by the need to do everything at once. When everything is spread out and manageable, it makes a huge difference in keeping the house under control. I’ll be sharing our full weekly schedule of tasks in my next newsletter, so be sure to check that out if you’re interested!
2. Close the Kitchen
You might have heard me mention this before, but closing the kitchen at the end of the day is a game-changer. There’s something so satisfying about waking up to a clean kitchen. “Closing the kitchen” means cleaning up after meals: putting away any leftovers, running the dishes off, cleaning pots and pans (I leave them to dry overnight), wiping down countertops and sinks, and even vacuuming. Doing this little routine before bed leaves me with a sense of accomplishment, and I can start the next day with a fresh, welcoming space. Trust me, it’s a simple habit that truly makes a difference!
3. Decluttering Brings Joy
One of the best things we’ve done recently is declutter our home. It’s been incredibly liberating. There’s something about removing unnecessary items that lightens the whole mood of the house. Plus, when there’s less stuff to manage, I spend less time cleaning and more time doing the things that truly matter. I can’t even begin to explain how much joy it has brought to my life, and I’ve noticed it brings peace to the whole family.
I’ve had several comments from others who’ve experienced similar transformations, like one mum who shared how decluttering had impacted her mental health for the better. It’s incredible how removing physical clutter can help clear your mind and create a more peaceful environment.
4. The Power of Gratitude
As much as I try to keep the house tidy, there are still moments when I get frustrated. Maybe a pile of laundry is growing or the dishes just keep piling up. But I’ve learned to flip those moments into gratitude. Instead of complaining about the chores, I try to thank God for giving me the ability to care for my family, the food that I get to prepare, and the home we’ve been blessed with. Simple as it sounds, this mindset shift has helped me maintain a more positive outlook and stay calm even when the work feels endless. It’s something I believe anyone can do, no matter how chaotic life feels at the moment.
5. Kids Are the Best Helpers
If you have kids, you know that sometimes they’re more of a distraction than a help. But as keyana has grown, she’s started to enjoy joining in on the cleaning process. The other day, she was wiping down counters and organising with so much joy that it became a special moment. I love having her involved because it shows her the value of maintaining our space together as a family. I’ve also learned that, even though she’s young, she knows how to be patient and wait for my attention when I’m busy, she’s got such a clever, funny side too!
6. Time for a Home Reset
The truth is, sometimes it feels like my home needs a reset. I recently had a conversation with a friend who’s starting from scratch after dealing with a lot of personal loss. She was feeling the weight of keeping her home clean and maintaining the balance. It can feel like everything is out of control at first, but the important thing is to take small steps. Don’t try to do everything at once, just focus on one task at a time, and soon enough, the house will begin to feel like home again.
There’s no magic formula, but there are simple habits that can really make a difference. Whether it’s a cleaning schedule, a gratitude shift, or involving your kids in the process, the goal is to make the task of keeping a home feel a little less daunting. You don’t have to do it all at once, and you don’t have to do it alone.
If you’re feeling like you need a reset in your home, I hope these tips give you a little inspiration and peace. And remember, every step counts! 🌿
