Hello darling,
Welcome back to the blog! Right, Today I want to talk about something that’s a bit close to my heart, my journey with God. Now, I won’t pretend it’s been a smooth ride all the way (spoiler alert: it hasn’t), but it’s been one of the most rewarding, eye-opening, and life-changing experiences I could’ve asked for. You know, the sort of thing that doesn’t happen overnight, but when you look back, you realise just how far you’ve come.
I used to think building a relationship with God was all about ticking boxes, reading your Bible every day, and praying on the hour. But what I’ve found is that it’s much more personal than that. It’s not about perfection, but about progress. And trust me, it’s taken me a while to get that. There’s no “one size fits all” approach to faith, and it’s often about trial, and error, and lots of prayer (and a few tears along the way).
So, I thought I’d share a few things that have really helped me grow in my faith. No fancy formulas or mystical secrets just simple, real-life tips that I’ve picked up over the years. If you’re looking for something to help you get a bit closer to God, or maybe just trying to figure out what on earth having “faith” really is, then grab a cup of tea and read on. Hopefully, something in here will help you find your way too.
1. Start with Prayer
Prayer is the foundation of any relationship, and it’s no different when it comes to God. Talking to Him isn’t about fancy words or rituals; it’s about being honest, raw, and open. For me, prayer is my lifeline. It’s where I express my fears, my gratitude, my questions, and my dreams. I’ve found that when I pour my heart out to God, it helps me feel more connected to Him, no matter what’s going on in my life.
At first, prayer felt awkward, like I didn’t know what to say or how to say it. But over time, I realised that prayer is just like a conversation with a close friend, except this friend knows me better than I know myself. Sometimes I pray out loud, sometimes in my head, and sometimes through writing. Whatever works, just keep the conversation going.
2. The Word
The Bible is God’s love letter to us. It’s where we can find His promises, His wisdom, and His guidance. Reading the Bible isn’t just about gaining knowledge; it’s about connecting with God’s heart. There are moments when I read a passage, and it feels like God is speaking directly to me, addressing exactly what I’m going through.
I started by reading books of the Bible that felt accessible to me, like Psalms or Proverbs, and now I try to read a little bit every day. You don’t have to start at Genesis and work your way through, though. Sometimes, God will lead me to specific verses that speak to my current situation, and I follow that prompt. Trusting the Holy Spirit to guide you in your Bible reading can make a big difference in your understanding of God’s word.
3. Value Worship
Worship isn’t just about singing on Sundays; it’s about living a life that honours God. However, I’ve found that singing worship songs, whether in church or alone, really helps me center my focus on God. It’s a way to acknowledge His greatness and remind myself of His goodness.
Even on days when I’m struggling, putting on a worship song and allowing the lyrics to fill my heart can be incredibly powerful. It’s like a reset button for my soul. I’ve come to realise that worship helps me shift my perspective from my problems to His greatness.
4. Create a Quiet Time with God
In today’s world, distractions are everywhere, and finding quiet moments can be challenging. But I’ve learned that in those quiet moments, whether it’s in the morning before everyone wakes up, during my lunch break, or right before bed, is when I can hear God’s voice the clearest. I intentionally set aside time to read my Bible, pray, and just sit in God’s presence.
This doesn’t have to be a long, drawn-out routine. Even just 10 or 15 minutes of focused time can make a difference. The key is to carve out a space in your day to intentionally connect with God.
5. Surround Yourself with Like-Minded People
One of the most important things I’ve learned on my journey with God is the value of community. Having people who can encourage me, pray with me, and hold me accountable has been so valuable. I believe God uses the people around us to speak His truths into our lives.
I’ve had the privilege of joining a small group, where we study the Bible together, pray for each other, and support each other in our spiritual walks. If you don’t have a community like that, I encourage you to seek one out. It’s not always easy to find, but it’s worth it.
6. Trust God’s Timing
One of the hardest things to learn in building a relationship with God is trusting His timing. I know I’ve often wanted things to move faster or on my own schedule, but I’ve learned that God’s plan is always better than mine. There’s peace in surrendering my timelines to Him and trusting that He knows what’s best for me.
Even when I can’t see the bigger picture, I remind myself that God is in control. My job is to trust Him, be obedient, and take one step at a time.
7. Serve Others
One of the biggest ways I’ve been able to experience God is by serving others. God calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves, and when I focus on helping others, whether that’s through volunteering, being kind, or offering a listening ear it brings me closer to Him. Serving is a way of living out God’s love and putting it into action.
8. Keep an Open Heart
Building a relationship with God requires a soft, open heart. I’ve learned that sometimes, God speaks to me through a feeling, a thought, or even a situation. Being open to His leading and His correction has helped me grow in ways I didn’t expect.
There have been moments when God has let me know of things in my life that needed to change, and though it wasn’t always easy, it was always for my good. An open heart allows God to work in us and through us.
Building a relationship with God is a journey. It’s not about perfection but about progression. It’s about showing up daily, even when it feels hard, and trusting that God is always with you. Remember, there is no formula to follow—what matters is your willingness to seek Him, to listen, and to trust Him with your heart.
There are no magic tricks or perfect answers, just my honest thoughts on how to build a deeper relationship with God. The journey’s not always easy (I mean, when is anything worth having ever easy?), but it’s totally worth it. And hey, we’re all in this together, right? Whether you’re just starting out, or you’ve been at it for years, there’s always room for growth. So, let’s keep at it. Keep praying, keep seeking.
If any of this resonates with you, or if you’ve got your own tips to share, I’d love to hear about it. Pop a comment below, and let’s talk! After all, we’re all walking this path of faith together, and who knows? Maybe something you say will be the bit of wisdom I need next. Until then, take care, keep trusting, and remember, you’re never walking alone.
Sending blessings to you!
