Hey darling, welcome back to the blog!

It’s a quiet morning in our home, and the kettle is on, gently whistling as I prepare my husband’s favourite cup of coffee. My daughter’s giggles echo from the living room as she plays with her favourite toys. The house is alive with warmth and love, yet my heart is focused on something even deeper, preparing for a time of fasting. This spiritual discipline has become a cornerstone in my walk with God, especially during moments when life feels heavy or uncertain.

Fasting can seem intimidating, can’t it? I used to think it was reserved for ultra-spiritual people, something I could never do because life kids, work, the endless to-do list, feel too full. But over time, I’ve discovered that fasting isn’t about perfection. It’s about intentionally creating space for God, even in the chaos of everyday life.

This week, I’m fasting for clarity on a decision our family needs to make. Between bedtime routines and the chatter of our busy schedules, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. But fasting has taught me that God meets us in the mess, in the busyness, and in the quiet moments when we pause to seek Him. It’s not about what we give up but about drawing closer to Him and allowing Him to guide us.

In this blog post, I’ll share practical tips for fasting rooted in biblical principles. Whether you’re fasting for the first time or looking for ways to deepen your spiritual practice, I hope this encourages you to take that next step of faith.

1. Understand the Purpose of Fasting

Fasting is not just about abstaining from food, it’s a spiritual discipline. When we fast, we intentionally set aside time to focus on God, seek His will, and grow in our relationship with Him. The Bible tells us that fasting is a way to humble ourselves before God, get rid of distractions, and align ourselves with His plans for us.

In Matthew 6:16-18, Jesus teaches that when we fast, we shouldn’t do it to seek approval from others but to connect with God more deeply. It’s about creating a heart that’s fully surrendered to Him.

2. Make Sure Your Fast Is Led by God

It’s crucial to remember that fasting should be led by the Holy Spirit. There are times when God will call us to fast, and there are times when we may choose to fast for personal reasons. But when God calls you to fast, He will equip you to do it.

One of the most important things I’ve learned is to distinguish between fasting because I feel led by God versus fasting to gain something for myself. There’s a difference. When I’m fasting because God is calling me to, I experience His strength and grace throughout the process. But when I fast just to achieve a personal goal or breakthrough, I tend to struggle and may even fall short. Always be sure to seek God’s direction before you begin a fast.

3. Pray with Purpose

Fasting without prayer is simply a diet. It’s during a fast that prayer becomes the centrepiece of the experience. As you stay from food, dedicate that time to prayer and seeking God. Whether you’re praying for breakthrough, clarity, or strength, make your prayers specific and intentional.

In the Bible, we see many examples of fasting with prayer for a breakthrough. In Ezra 8:23, it says, “So we fasted and petitioned our God about this, and he answered our prayer.” God honours our sincere prayers during times of fasting, and He will respond according to His will.

4. Prepare Your Heart and Body

Preparation is key. Just as with any spiritual practice, it’s important to prepare both your heart and your body for a fast. Spiritually, you should enter a fast with the right attitude repentance, and a desire to draw closer to God. Ask the Lord to cleanse your heart and reveal any areas in your life where you need to grow or make changes.

Physically, make sure you’re healthy enough to fast, especially if you’re doing an extended or more intense fast. You may want to consult with your doctor if you have any medical conditions, as some fasts can be physically demanding.

5. Fast with the Right Attitude

As we fast, we need to check our motives. Fasting isn’t about putting on a show for others. In Matthew 6:16-18, Jesus warns us not to fast for the approval of others. When you fast, it should be a private matter between you and God. Keep it between you and Him—don’t boast about it or make it obvious.

Also, avoid grumbling or complaining during your fast. Instead of focusing on your hunger or discomfort, turn that energy into praise and worship. Remember, fasting is an opportunity to draw closer to God, not a burden.

6. Stay in the Word

During a fast, it’s crucial to spend time in the Word of God. Reading Scripture during your fast helps keep your mind focused on God and His promises. I’ve found that fasting without immersing myself in the Word can lead to distractions and temptations. God’s Word is powerful and serves as a tool to strengthen your spirit during your fast.

During my fasts, I like to focus on specific Scriptures that align with the breakthrough I am praying for. If I’m fasting for healing, I’ll meditate on the Scriptures about God’s healing power. If I’m fasting for clarity, I’ll seek out verses about wisdom and guidance.

7. Don’t Give Up

Fasting can be challenging, and it’s easy to feel discouraged, especially if you don’t see immediate results. But don’t give up! God sees your sacrifice and your faithfulness. Keep pressing in, even when it’s hard. Remember the words of Jesus in Matthew 17:21, “This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting.” There are some breakthroughs that only come through persistent prayer and fasting.

8. Remove Distractions

I also find it helpful to avoid distractions during my fast. This means taking time away from social media, television, and other things that may pull me away from my focus on God. The purpose of fasting is to remove distractions, so make sure you’re fully committing your time and energy to seeking God.

9. Trust in God’s Timing

Lastly, trust that God will answer your prayers in His perfect timing. When you fast, you may not immediately see the breakthrough you’re praying for, but that doesn’t mean God isn’t working behind the scenes. The Bible tells us in Isaiah 40:31 that “those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.” Keep your faith strong, even if the answer doesn’t come right away.

Fasting is a powerful tool that can help you break through spiritual barriers, gain clarity, and experience a deeper relationship with God.

The day is nearly over, and as I sit on the couch with a notebook in hand, reflecting on this fast, I feel a quiet sense of peace. My husband’s voice hums from the kitchen as he tidies up after dinner, and my daughter is already fast asleep, clutching her favourite blanket. These simple moments of family life remind me of God’s faithfulness, even when I feel stretched thin or uncertain about the future.

Fasting isn’t about how much you can sacrifice it’s about how much space you allow for God to move. It’s about slowing down enough to hear His voice, trusting Him with your worries, and surrendering your plans to His perfect will. There were moments today when I felt weak, tempted to snack or distracted by life’s demands, but in those moments, I leaned on God, and He gave me the strength to keep going.

As you consider fasting, know that you don’t have to have it all figured out. Start small, be honest with God, and let Him guide you. Whether it’s for healing, clarity, or breakthrough, He sees your heart and honours your faithfulness.

If you’ve never fasted before, I hope this blog post encourages you to give it a try. And if fasting is already a part of your walk with God, may this serve as a reminder of the beauty and power of seeking Him wholeheartedly.

Sending blessings to you!
