Hey Darling,
Welcome back to the blog! It’s winter right now, and as I sit here writing this, I can see weeds blowing across the driveway, reminding me that it’s definitely time for a clean-up. Inside, the house feels just as chaotic, my daughter’s toys are scattered across the floor, the living room and kitchen need tidying, and there’s a mountain of dishes waiting to be sorted. Some pots still need handwashing, the dishwasher needs loading, and the laundry pile is calling my name. On top of that, I’ve got content pieces to create, emails to catch up on, and a few calls to make. It’s just one of those days where the to-do list feels never-ending!
But amongst all this busyness, I wanted to pause and reflect on something that’s been on my heart recently: breaking free from sin cycles. We all know the struggle of feeling stuck in patterns that hold us back from living the full, abundant life God has for us. It’s tough, but today I’m sharing how we can overcome these cycles and find true freedom in Christ.
We all face different battles in our walk with Christ, and one of the most frustrating things can be feeling like we’re trapped in cycles of sin. It can feel discouraging, like no matter how hard we try, we just keep falling into the same old patterns. So, today, I want to talk about why this happens and share how we can overcome it.
Why Do We Struggle with Sin?
First off, it’s important to acknowledge that sin is deeply rooted in human nature. We’re all born with a sinful nature, and the enemy works tirelessly to keep us bound by things that separate us from God. Whether it’s lust, anger, gossip, pride, or any other temptation, sin often feels easier or more comforting in the moment. But here’s the truth: just because sin feels comfortable doesn’t mean it’s good for us.
In fact, sin often brings temporary pleasure but long-term pain. As believers, we’re told that we’ve been set free from the power of sin through Christ’s sacrifice on the cross (Romans 6:18). So, why does it still feel like we’re stuck in it sometimes? Well, it’s because although we’ve been set free positionally, and practically, we’re still learning to live in that freedom. And sometimes, the process of improvement takes longer than we expect.
The Struggle with Enjoying Sin
This is a big one, and it’s something that many of us don’t always talk about openly. If we’re being honest, there are times when we actually enjoy the sin we’re caught up in. This can be particularly tough to admit because, as Christians, we know that we should hate sin and desire righteousness. But the reality is that some sins have a way of making us feel comfortable, secure, or even “good” for a moment.
It’s easy to get caught up in the cycle of sin because, on some level, it brings a form of gratification. Whether it’s through the physical pleasure of lust, the temporary relief of overeating, or the fleeting high of indulging in unhealthy habits, the truth is that sin can feel good in the moment. But here’s the key: we must remember that this temporary pleasure is not worth the long-term consequences. Sin separates us from the peace and joy that only God can give.
When I reflect on my struggles, I remember times when I allowed myself to indulge in certain things because I thought they brought comfort. But those things always left me feeling empty and spiritually drained. It’s like a cycle that repeats itself, and the more we indulge in it, the harder it becomes to break free. But there’s good news: we don’t have to stay stuck in it!
How to Break Free from Sin Cycles
- Acknowledge the Struggle
The first step in overcoming sin is acknowledging it. We need to be real with ourselves and with God about the areas where we’re struggling. Trying to hide our sin or pretend it’s not a problem only keeps us trapped. When we bring it to the light, it loses its power over us. - Recognise the Lie
The enemy often convinces us that our sin is harmless or that we’ll never be able to overcome it. But that’s a lie! Romans 6:6 says, “For we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body ruled by sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin.” Jesus died to set us free from the power of sin, and we have the authority to say no to it. - Lean on God’s Strength
We cannot overcome sin on our own. I’ve tried countless times to break free from sin in my strength, and it’s never worked. But the moment I realised that I needed to fully rely on God’s power, things began to change. Ephesians 6:10 says, “Finally, be strong in the Lord and his mighty power.” When we lean on God, He gives us the strength to overcome. - Renew Your Mind
Sin often has a hold on us because of the way we think. If we continue to entertain sinful thoughts, we’re more likely to fall into sinful actions. That’s why it’s so important to renew our minds with God’s Word. Philippians 4:8 tells us to “think about whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable.” The more we meditate on God’s truth, the less room there is for sin to take root. - Create New Habits
Breaking free from sin requires more than just willpower; it requires replacing old habits with new ones. If you’re struggling with a particular sin, start by finding new ways to focus your energy. Spend time in prayer, worship, or serving others. The more we fill our lives with God’s presence, the less space there is for sin to creep in. - Accountability is Key
One of the most powerful tools in overcoming sin is having accountability. Find a trusted friend or mentor who can walk alongside you in your journey and hold you accountable. James 5:16 says, “Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed.” There is power in sharing our struggles and praying for one another. - Don’t Give Up
Finally, remember that overcoming sin is a process. It’s not going to happen overnight, and there will be setbacks along the way. But don’t give up! Keep pressing forward, keep relying on God, and keep renewing your mind with His Word. With His help, you will break free.
It’s easy to get discouraged when we feel stuck in a cycle of sin. But I want to remind you today that Jesus has already set you free. It’s a journey of grace, growth, and relying on His strength to overcome the habits that try to hold us back. If you’re feeling caught in a cycle, remember: that you are not alone, and God’s power to change is greater than anything that holds you captive.
Let’s keep moving forward, trusting that God is working in us and through us, breaking down every barrier that stands in the way of the freedom He’s already given us.
Thanks so much for reading, and I’m praying for you as you continue this journey. Don’t forget: freedom is available to you, and the power to break free is already in your hands through Christ.
Sending blessings your way!
